It was on the wrong side of midnight and I found myself staring at a rather unremarkable cafe window in an empty dark street in Darwin. Written on the window in hot pink spray paint was
“Build a life that you don’t need a holiday from”
It was like getting hit on the head by a random wet flying fish (and that has actually been known to happen in Darwin! true story, I have the NT News headline to prove it), and a total wake up call. To be honest, that wake up call was also helped along by a sailor mouth tarot card reader from Geelong…but that is another story for another day.
Before photography, I was a Mental Health Nurse for 10 years, and I don’t regret that for one minute. Nursing treated me well, It enabled be to live and work in beautiful and remote parts of Australia . I had the privilege of helping people through difficult periods of their life and worked with amazing nurses while doing so. But despite all this I would regularly get in a funk. A what the hell am I doing with my life kind of funk, which resulted in me moving regularly, taking two year long career breaks to go travelling and at times being disillusioned with myself and the world.
Fast forward a few years after seeing that fateful quote, and here I am, running a business of creating unique pet portraits and its not difficult for me to see how I got here. Because it makes people smile and laugh and seeing that reaction also makes me happy (selfish I know). Maybe because of my background in working in Mental Health, I continue to be a big believer in doing what makes you happy, because if your not happy how can you help others around you find the same. Of course it has also been been suggested, (many) times that because of my history in Mental Health, it explains why my imagination goes to slightly… unusual places.
So there in a nutshell, is a little bit about how I got here. Of course a another big influence (in a little furry package) in my journey towards creating somewhat unusual pet portraits for a living is Lentil, my floppy-eared muse. You can read more about Lentil HERE
