I really was regretting not googling
“how not to vomit in front a room full of photographers”
while watching my prints being judged. (And yes I just used google as a verb, has it made it to the dictionary as yet?). It is a nerve racking experience having experienced judges look at images you are emotionally attached to with a critical eye. It has to be done, being critiqued, otherwise how do you move forward in bettering your skills. I guess what I was wondering at the time, was why I choose to sit right in the middle of the room while being critiqued with everyone around me watching the judging becoming aware that it was my print being judged. Maybe due to the look of anxiety/excitement on my face, but more likely due to Nancy, my fellow lovely photographer saying in a very loud whisper to everyone in the audience “that’s her print” while pointing at me! If you suck at self promotion I highly recommend having Nancy on your side 🙂
Anxiety soon turned to elation though. Lenny – The Ring Master got Gold with Distinction (97/100), Gus – the slobbery carnival kisser got Gold (90/100) and Matilda the good looking ginger got Silver (81/100). Holy Shit! Seriously… so happy. I sometimes get to a point when looking at and refining my images that I loose the original impact of the image, which is what happened to me because while I was hopeful that they would do well, I had no idea they would go…that well!
On a side note, I did end up googling “how not to vomit in front of others” out of curiosity. Number one tip was “drink less alcohol”. Noted, but not particularly helpful in my case. This tip was closely followed by an article ‘How to vomit politely in front of others”. The things you find on the internet hey.
But back to the awards, it was a buzz to be surrounded by, meet, and supported by such amazing photographers. I was able to meet so many photographers this year whose work I have been admiring for ages, in fact I got a touch star struck at times, geek alert! You can go to this link here to see the category winners of the 2015 Victorian AIPP Epson Professional Photographer Awards. I was a finalist in the Emerging Photographer category, yeeeeow! So trilled! Needless to say that Lentil the star of the show got a few extra treats over the past days, so instead of the fame going to his head, it is going to his hips… literally.
You can see the original blog post about Lentil the Ring Master HERE. And I will be blogging about Gus in the kissing booth soon!
